So, as a hard core Open Source Unix guy I’m sure I’m going to a special hell for this… but I’m starting to enjoy programming in… wait for it… .NET.
There, I said it. Awful, no?
You see, my illustrious employer announced with great fanfare that we are now a .NET shop:
While it is true that the Java 2 Platform (J2EE) continues to siphon some customers away from Microsoft's predominance, it is clear that industry leaders embrace .NET and rely on Microsoft's platform and tools for their applications.
Gagging aside, I’d been dabbling in C# and ASP.NET for a bit so I took the man up on his stated goal. I recently completed our department’s first ever .NET web app which, while being conceptually simple (display list from database, click on title for details), allowed me to delve into several .NET areas and build among other things an ASP.NET user control, a custom ASP.NET validation control, a shared assembly for working with Active Directory (complete with Nunit unit testing), a web service and a SharePoint web part that talks to it.
I can’t say at this point if my excitement is just “new toyism” or what, but it’s been fun.
