Saw: TMNT

Yeah, that’s right, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you got a problem with that?

I gotta say, I enjoyed it. My sights were set pretty low, so it was easy to be entertained. The voice credits have a few Big Names among them, I mean Patrick Stewart, Sarah Michelle Gellar and even Laurence Fishburne?!? And c’mon Mako as Master Splinter… can’t go wrong there!

The whole thing is done in that weird computer rendered, not quite realistic CGI but not really animated bit, for a neat look.

There were some pretty cool scenes — like a fight scene between Leo and Raf and a pretty funny one where Rafael/Nightwatcher gets his butt kicked by some little Gremlin looking thing to a rock remake of Black Betty.

Speaking of the music, the soundtrack is surprisingly hard core for a PG movie. Some of it is alternative poop that’s not my thing, but some is rock/rap stuff that’s… gosh… actually good.

It’s too bad that the whole TMNT genre has slipped into 90′s camp. Even with a wicked soundtrack and great voice talent and even a decent plot sprinkled with family mores and bushido lessons, this movie could never be taken seriously because it’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, oh well.

Also of note, I “stole” this movie. It was released in theaters back in March and is not playing, I think, anywhere. There also doesn’t seem to be a DVD release date anytime soon, so I hit Pirate Bay and did the deed. I subsequently watched it on my iPod.

Before anyone starts whining… I then went and bought the soundtrack off iTunes. Someone made money off me, because of my download, so put a sock in it!
